Frontier: Beyond the Stars is a tabletop RPG based on "Year Zero" Engine. We take testing and balancing seriously - many game mechanics and content have been built by gamers over the years. This is an ongoing process, which means we can consistently add new content as it gets perfected and funded.

At the moment, we’ve released a project starter including an adventure and basic mechanics. We’ve got a main tabletop game rulebook upcoming and right after that, we plan to release updates on spaceship battles and adventures, as well as extra lorebooks and much more!

The core rulebook provides everything you need for your adventure - rules, gear, and lore. However, it’s just the tip of an iceberg when it comes to the game content - and we’ll be adding it as we can. Stay tuned for updates! 

Our game is based on the fairly simple Year Zero Engine plus loads of content and tactical diversity. The majority of characters’ actions require just a single skill check - or a single roll of multiple dice. That being said, additional success and critical failure mechanics allow to drastically diversify the dice roll outcomes and consequences!

Character Creation

Each character’s origin offers certain advantages and positions specific to the chosen role.
Each character has four basic attributes and a skillset linked to those attributes.
Attribute points can be partially converted into biomodification points, which give characters unusual perks, from enhanced vision to radiation protection and much more. You can get these only before the game starts.
Characters have access to talents - special abilities providing situational advantages. You can buy talents for experience points.

core mechanics

Any check is a roll of a number of six-sided dice. Your action will succeed if you roll at least one 6.
Any extra 6 rolled allow for an extraordinary outcome, allowing player to chose additional effects
Just like all YZE-based games, players can take a risk by pushing their roll. In that case, they reroll all dice that aren’t 6 or 1. This way, they can turn a failed check into a success or improve a successful check.

However, if you get more ones than sixes in a roll, your check is a critical failure, a.k.a. a catastrophically negative outcome.

Apart from negative outcomes, a critical failure gives character an adrenaline point that can buy them a serious advantage in the future! For example, it can add an extra die to your roll or provide a guaranteed outcome.
